Thermo Scientific Explorer 4 Additive SEM delivers 3-D printing process control

The new Thermo Scientific Explorer 4 Additive is the first commercially released SEM designed to measure particle size, shape, and composition in AM metal powders and to inspect finished parts to ensure quality, says the company.

The SEM automatically and simultaneously analyzes particle size distribution and morphology. Advanced energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectrometry provides fast elemental analysis that can automatically identify impurities. Suspect particles can be relocated for more detailed examination.

The system’s ability to examine and classify large sets of particles, inclusions, voids, and cracks within minutes enables the use of SPC techniques and permits faster responses to process excursions, the manufacturer reports.
