Sperian Hearing Protection establishes Hearing Conservation Dept.

Sperian Hearing Protection LLC, Smithfield, R.I., has announced the formation of a Hearing Conservation Dept. to act as a focal point for the company's initiatives in research, training, and education, as well as to enhance its advisory role in standards regulation.

With headquarters at the Howard Leight&174; facility in San Diego, the department is headed by Director of Hearing Conservation Brad Witt. In May the department named Theresa Schulz, an audiologist and hearing conservation specialist, as hearing conservation manager.

Witt has been an industrial audiologist for more than 25 years. He has degrees from Brigham Young and Northwestern and has practiced throughout the U.S. and the Middle East. He managed Pacific Audiologics for 14 years, is a past president of the National Hearing Conservation Association, and has been with Sperian since 2004. Witt was recognized as Outstanding Lecturer in 2006 and 2007 at the National Hearing Conservation Association.

Schulz's experience includes more than 20 years in the U.S. military's Hearing Conservation program, dozens of articles in scholarly publications, and more than 30 professional presentations to professional conferences. She has served as president of the Council for Accreditation in Occupational Hearing Conservation and recently completed her tenure as president of the National Hearing Conservation Association.

The department's mission includes providing training and hands-on global implementation of VeriPRO™, Howard Leight's fit verification system for hearing protectors; creating educational tools and training materials in support of safety and hearing professionals for use in their hearing conservation efforts; expanding the role of Sperian Hearing Protection in regulatory and standards committees, as well as professional organizations and safety industry groups; and supporting the company's hearing protector offerings (in products and services), especially to military and government customers.

Howard Leight by Sperian manufactures hearing protectors for the industrial market.
