Robotic system inspects, repairs steam generators

Zetec Inc. has introduced the ZR-1 robot system for inspecting and repairing steam generators. The single robotic manipulator system performs eddy current inspection and remains installed for necessary maintenance or repair.

The system is designed to support a variety of third-party tool heads for tube plugging, welding, cleaning, and tube end expansion. The wrist assembly has a built-in camera for automatic tube positioning, eliminating the need for cameras for each tool head.

Hot-shoe connection technology facilitates tool head changeout with automatic tool head recognition, minimizes cables, and reduces changeout time.

A three-axis motion that positions the tool head in the manway opening along with simple tool head changeout helps reduce worker exposure to radiation and radioactive contamination.

When combined with the company's Machine Vision tools software, the robotic system can use automatic tube location functions for inspection, maintenance, and repair, which eliminate manual job maneuvers.

The robotic system comprises three modular components: the rail, mast, and arm. The modular component construction makes installation a one-person job and reduces straining injuries.
