Sample parts blackening available for evaluation
- June 27, 2016

- Finishing
Birchwood Technologies offers free sample finishing of iron, steel, and aluminum parts to demonstrate its finishing processes. Prospective customers can send in five to 10 unfinished parts with a sample request form for the company to process in its lab. The firm then provides process details and returns the finished parts within one week.
On steel and iron parts, the company uses the TRU TEMP® low-temperature black oxide process, which forms a black magnetite finish that complies with Mil-DTL-13924 Class One. The process takes 25 min. using a dip-tank method.
On aluminum parts, the LUMICLAD® electroless black oxide process forms a smooth, durable black finish that is 0.000060 in. thick. The process, which imparts an electrically conductive finish, takes 30 min. for most aluminum alloys using a dip-tank process.
The company also can test-finish iron and steel parts with aluminum oxide and zinc phosphate. These processes are suitable for parts that don't require a black finish, but need a protective gray coating.
